The capital’s fire service revealed a fire erupted through a home in south east London in the early hours of the morning. A large number of firefighters have assembled to tackle the blaze after the roof of the detached house caught alight.

“Fire crews from Orpington, Biggin Hill, Bromley and surrounding stations are at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known.”

Station Commander Clive Robinson, who is at the scene, said: “Crews are working extremely hard to bring this large fire under control, and are expected to remain at the scene for some time.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible.”

The warning comes as commuters across the capital and country deal with the ongoing rail strike.

Around 40,000 staff members from the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) ground the country to a halt over concerns about pay and work conditions, including on the Bromley-Kent border.
