Sporting’s Europa League heroes celebrated their dramatic penalty-shootout triumph over Arsenal with a booze-filled party in one of London’s top nightclubs. The resilient Portuguese side, who also beat Tottenham in the group stages of this season’s Champions League, held their nerve to convert all five of their spot-kicks as Nuno Santos dispatched the winner from 12 yards after Gabriel Martinelli’s penalty was saved by veteran goalkeeper Adan.

Express Sport can reveal that Sporting decided to celebrate the memorable upset in style by heading to glamorous nightclub Reign in Piccadilly Circus, where they partied long into the night.

Ruben Amorim’s impressive outfit, who are arguably the best footballing side to have visited the Emirates Stadium this season on the basis of their brave performance, are not back in action until after the international break when they host Santa Clara in the Primeira Liga on April 2.

The small break in their schedule offers further explanation as to why the players opted to party in the swanky central London venue where bottles of champagne can cost up to £35,000.

Sporting’s celebratory antics follows a recent trend as Express Sport has also learned that members of AC Milan’s squad – including Olivier Giroud – headed to Cirque Le Soir nightclub in Carnaby last Wednesday night to celebrate their Champions League triumph (1-0 victors on aggregate) over Tottenham before heading back to Italy.

In both instances, it is now known whether Sporting or AC Milan’s players received permission from their managers – Amorim and Stefano Pioli – to let their hair down after securing qualification for the Europa League and Champions League quarter-finals respectively.

Sporting will now meet Juventus for a place in the semi-finals, where they could potentially meet Manchester United if Erik ten Hag’s side are able to dispatch Sevilla.

Meanwhile, AC Milan were handed the favourable side of the Champions League draw as they prepare to lock horns with Serie A rivals Napoli for a place in the last four, where they would face Inter Milan or Benfica.

Generally, Premier League clubs operate with a very strict travel policy when playing matches in Europe and most sides opt to return to England straight after their matches on foreign soil ahead of domestic fixtures at the weekend.

Arsenal were due to stay overnight and train in Lisbon on the Friday morning following their 2-2 draw at the Jose Alvalade Stadium on March 16 before a late change of plan.

The Gunners will feel frustrated at the way this knockout tie got away from them having taken the lead on Thursday night through Granit Xhaka’s first-half strike as Kim Kardashian watched on from the stands.

However, Sporting hit back through former Wolves attacker Pedro Goncalves, who caught Aaron Ramsdale napping as he lobbed the ball over the England international’s goalkeeper’s head from 50 yards.

The visitors were also reduced to 10 men in the final minutes of extra-time when Manuel Ugarte, who has since revealed he watched the penalty shootout on a delayed stream on his phone in the dressing room, received a second yellow card for hammering into Bukayo Saka.

Sporting boss Amorim, who is reportedly rated by Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, claimed after the match that his young players have the potential to reach the same level as Arsenal’s table-topping stars.

“All the young players we have can reach the level of Arsenal players, but they have to grow,” the Portuguese coach said.

“We have to praise them and then get back to work. I’m not crazy and I know the impact this game had on the players, but everything can change. It’s a good moment for them, they played well and they got through to the next round, but we can’t forget what happened before.

“If we go from this starting point, we are on the right path. Liga Portugal is our priority. Difficult games are coming, anything can happen and that is our focus.”
